Waterside A were the winners of Division 2 of the National Cadet League which was played at Testwood on 24th March.

On the final day of the competition they held a slender lead over Bournemouth D, but were without no 1 player Artur Caltabiano, so it was going to be a difficult day. As North Mundham didn’t turn up everyone recorded a 9-0 win and so it was important to record two wins.

In their first match against Bournemouth D it started with very close matches, William Stevens won his in 4 sets, Max Herbertson was unlucky to lose his 8-11 in the fifth, and then came reserve Josh Lockyer. After losing the first set, Josh won the next two, but lost the fourth set 10-12, only to play a ‘blinder’ in the final set winning 11-1. Josh later played another five setter again winning in the fifth. William won all of his three matches, also winning his final match in the fifth. The final score was Waterside A 6 – Bournemouth D 3

In their second match they beat Bournemouth C  7 – 2. Josh won one and Max and William won all three. In the end their reserve did them proud and they won their division comfortably.

Waterside A team wins National Cadet League Division 2
William, Josh and Max – happy after securing the title

Our B team played in the third division and in despite of coming fourth they all gained valuable experience in quite a competitive division. The team on the day was Katie Holt, Vito Falso and James Fensome. They lost both matches against Winchester and Bournemouth E 2 – 7. Against Winchester Katie and James both beat their no 3 with Vito losing 8-11 in the fifth. In the second match fortunes were reversed with Vito winning two games and Katie losing one of her games 6-11 in the fifth. This was a good learning experience for all of our players and so next year we will be expecting to field at least three teams.
