June 2013 saw the second Waterside 1 star tournament of the year held at the Waterside Table Tennis Club  and there was great cause to celebrate for the club as one of their own took home the boys under 13’s title, the cadet boys under 15’s title and Junior boys under 18’s title.   It was an incredibly impressive performance from Artur Caltabiano (Hampshire) and what made it even more impressive was the fact that he only dropped three games all day in a commanding performance.

There were other events being played whilst the “Artur show” was going on with the under 11’s boys title going to Kai Ghazi-Timms (Middlesex) in a very tight final game which was poised on a knife edge going into the final set.  Kai started the fifth set brightly and was helped to an 11-4 win by his opponent Reece Chamdal serving off three times.

The Girls under 11’s event was won by Grace Edwards (Essex) who lost only one game en route to the title and she also finished third place in the girls under 13’s tournament which was won by number ten ranked Shristi Ghosh (Buckinghamshire). The runners up spot in the under 13’s event going to Vicky Coll (Oxfordshire) who performed impressively to beat Grace Edwards, who is nine places above her in the rankings.

There was more success for Hampshire and Waterside as Katie Holt (Hampshire) ran out victorious in the cadet girls under 15’s event where Shristi Ghosh also had a podium finish in the runners up spot.  Katie won all of her matches in style, with only one game going to five sets against Grace Edwards and convincingly beating runner up Shristi Ghosh.

Shristi would however have the last say in the day’s proceedings as she also won the junior girls under 18’s event beating Katie along the way to claiming her second title of the day.

Congratulations to all of the competitors for a superb display of table tennis and as ever a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who help to make the tournament possible.
