The Hampshire Cadets (U15s) were in action on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st at the Cippenham Table Tennis Centre in Slough, Berkshire. The County was represented by Ben Poulter (Southampton), Joe Watkins (Southampton), Henry Rogers (Southampton), Scarlett McDonagh (Basingstoke) and Katie Le Peuple (Southampton).
The players all performed admirably and it is difficult to single out who had the performance of the weekend- there were several notable performances. Everybody contributed wins for the team and everyone had their special moments. I will mention a few highlights. Henry Rogers who stood in for us at the last minute last
year was on the team sheet a little earlier this year and his performances got stronger
the more games he played on day one.
Joe Watkins was undoubtedly the outstanding athlete on the weekend and his power of movement contributed hugely to his successes over the weekend. Scarlett McDonagh playing in her first County representative event won matches for the team on both days. Ben Poulter displayed outstanding resilience on day two fighting tooth and nail and playing with bravery when in tight situations on his way to finishing with a 11 from 12 win ratio. Katie Le Peuple who has only just turned 11 and played for only a few months played very well and finished the weekend with a 5 from 12 win average which would make her a contender for the player of the weekend anyway but she sealed it with her constant volunteering to umpire and generally keeping everyone on their toes all weekend.
The team finished the weekend with 3 wins and 3 losses to finish in a respectable mid-table position.
The story of the weekend was not just about results it was about building for the future and there were some signs of promise on display.
