Soton West A extend their lead at the top of the division to 6 points after an 8-2 victory over 6th place Soton West C (Player of the Match Ed Slot won all 3 for Soton West A). 2nd place Waterside A beat 8th place Waterside C 6-4 (Player of the Match Phil Handy won all 3 for Waterside A). Mark Butler had to withdraw from the match after one set due to an injured shoulder. 3rd place Waterside B beat 7th place Soton West B 8-2 (Player of the Match Wojciech Placek and Artur Veeck Caltabiano won all 3 for Waterside B). 4th place Generation II lost 6-4 to 5th place Alpha A (Player of the Match Alex Rorke won 2 for Alpha A).
Waterside E title candidates were given a tough ride by Hedge End a before winning 6-4. They were without ace Steve Hemmings. Robin Plunkett took full advantage to beat Alan Gordon(1) who he often loses to, Shaun Newcombe(2) and Colin Bryson(2) using a mixture of blocked and punched backhands added to consistent forehand rolls. John Taylor added one for the beaten trio with a good performance v Gordon, but crucially lost in 5 sets to Newcombe who was his usual fluent self in their doubles win, having earlier been outfoxed by Bryson. Colin Jones failed to trouble the scorers, but was 1 leg all and 10-6 up before Bryson found his consistency to win 3 legs to one. Alan Gordon who had a troublesome night found his forehand topspins and kills to beat Jones to carry Waterside over the line.

Congratulations to Hugo on a very good performance to earn the “Player of the Match” award. He appears to be a more consistent player this season and has some good offensive strokes. The match was played in a very good spirit, with South-West fielding two reserves. Perhaps Waterside were caught a little cold and under-performed against steady, resilient opposition.

Waterside K vs Hedge End B
This match started with a very close match between Trevor Mowle and Dennis Cox, but it was Dennis who won with a 13-11 in the 5th game. Martin Cheffy and Katie Holt also had a 5 game match, with swings of good play and fortune, from one to other. Even though Katie took the 4th game with 10-0 whitewash it was Martin that won the 5th game and match. Albert Harding and Terry Mills exchanged some good banter and play, but it was Albert that won in 3 games. Denis Cox and Martin Cheffy continued the evening with further victories and HedgeEnd B won overall 7-3. An enjoyable evening of good banter and table tennis.
