~The Waterside Young Players tournament today was a resounding success for players, parents and organisers alike.
Everyone had a thoroughly good time and the quality of some of the matches belied the sparse experience of the players.
The tournament had entries from diverse areas around Southampton and we were pleased to see some players from our neighbours in Winchester.
Girls made an impact in the tournament and the final was contested by a boy from Winchester and a girl from The New Forest. This was an exciting affair as were the other two matches in the final stages. On this occasion honours went to Winchester after a final which kept everyone enthralled.
The whole event was competitive especially in the final groups as players of similar ability were pitted against each other. The top group were not the only ones to put on a fine display and all matches were keenly contested. As well as a variety of areas and both sexes being represented there was a wide range of playing experience amongst the contestants – ranging between 2 years and 2 weeks. Interestingly the final was between two players of less than a year’s experience.
The tournament ran smoothly under the guidance of John Fox and Colin French and the club are grateful for the assistance given by parents and other helpers during the event.
There will undoubtedly be more events of this type due the steady surge of new players entering the sport in the area.
Waterside Table Tennis Club looks forward to seeing them all again soon.
